I’ve been on a Tegan and Sara kick lately. When I find myself in an emotional state–that is, when I’m ‘feeling all the feelings’-I turn to my favorite Canadian singer-songwriters.

You might remember the twins from their epic performance at the Oscars where they sang the Lego Movie theme song “Everything Is Awesome” with The Lonely Island.

Or maybe their song “Closer” gets stuck in your head, with its earworm of a chorus in which Tegan promises she “won’t treat you like you’re oh so typical.”

“Closer” was the lead single off of their 2013 album Heartthrob, which I have had on repeat for oh, about a year straight, basically since I saw them at Riot Fest in 2014. Buy it. Love it. You won’t regret it.

Last night, as I was fretting about revising another post which seems to be going nowhere, I thought to myself, Man, I wish Tegan and Sara sang in Spanish and then I’d be set. That’s what I’ve spent all my free time listening to lately anyway.

The internet is a beautiful place for a fangirl. Lo and behold, I discovered our favorite gemelas produced a version of “Closer” en español featuring Mexican singer Ximena Sariñana!

Todo lo que quiero es acercarme un poco…

Sariñana translated the lyrics from English to Spanish and then reworked them with a bit of artistic license.  Spanish words typically have more syllables than their English counterparts, so a 100% faithful translation would have been just unwieldy if not impossible!

Tegan and Sara’s writing style is usually direct address using second-person neutral pronouns (e.g., the use of the ambiguous “you” instead of he/him and she/her) which results in songs that are inclusive of all sexual orientations and gender identities.

Yet the gendered nature of Spanish grammar doesn’t allow for the same artistic mystery, and this is one aspect which is lost in translation.  The lyrics written as “los dos” makes clear in Spanish that this is a male/female couple because a love between two women would have been written “las dos.”

I find Sariñana’s efforts impressive as she hewed closely to the English version’s original lyrical message and concept despite the aforementioned challenges.   I really like how she maintained the lilt of the word “closer” in Spanish by choosing “poco” for a similar O-sound. Also, while the rhyme scheme isn’t quite the same as the original, she maintained rhyming elements such as “razón” and “corazón” in the pre-chorus sections, which leads to an interpretation that both reads and sounds faithful. ¡Buen trabajo, Ximena!

Letra Española de “Closer” de Tegan and Sara con Ximena Sariñana

Todo lo que quiero
Es acercarme un poco
Quiero que me digas
Si vas a acercarte un poco

Suspiraré antes de que
Te acerques un poco
Yo sentiré hasta en la piel
Cuando te acerques un poco

La puerta abierta
En espera de qué quieras
La noche será para los dos

It’s not just all physical
I’m the type who won’t get oh so critical
So let’s make things physical
I won’t treat you like you’re oh so typical

Oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh

I won’t treat you like you’re oh so typical

Solamente pienso
En acostarme a tu lado
Voy a convencerte
De que te acuestes a mi lado

Toda razón se desvaneció
Al acercarnos un poco
Mi corazón pierde el control
Cuando te acercas un poco

La luz se apaga
El sol ya no hace falta
La noche será para los dos

It’s not just all physical
I’m the type who won’t get oh so critical
So let’s make things physical
I won’t treat you like you’re oh so typical

I want you close
I want you
I won’t treat you like you’re typical

I want you close
I want you
I won’t treat you like you’re typical

Ooo, oooooo
Ooo, oooooo
Ooo, oooooo
Ooo, oooooo

Sólo estaremos tú y yo
Solos los dos
Sólo estaremos tú y yo
Solos los dos

It’s not just all physical
I’m the type who won’t get oh so critical
So let’s make things physical
I won’t treat you like you’re oh so typical

I want you close
I want you
I won’t treat you like you’re typical

I want you close
I want you
I won’t treat you like you’re typical

Oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh

I won’t treat you like you’re typical

Oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh

I won’t treat you like you’re typical

Todo lo que quiero
Es acercarme un poco
Quiero que me digas
Si vas a acercarte un poco

How to Get the Music

Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to find a legal way get a download of the bilingual version of “Closer.” I’ve tweeted at Ximena Sariñana and at Tegan and Sara to ask why the song disappeared from Soundcloud, but as for getting a reply, what did the Magic 8 Ball used to say? Outlook not so good. Heartthrob is a pretty stellar album, though, even if it is English-only. 😛  If you are a member of Amazon Prime, you can listen to the whole album for free.  If not, there are a couple of purchase options below, and many of Heartthrob‘s songs are still streaming on the official Tegan and Sara Soundcloud page.

And this is totally off topic, but the T&S Instagram account is pretty entertaining.   Sara has a really cute cat.
